Hello and welcome to this special Mother’s Day edition of “Storming the Gates!”
Have you ever felt like you were raising a wild donkey? Or have your offspring been delightfully tame lambs? Either way, the Lord chose you to raise the children you have. He sees you, and He will equip you with all you need to succeed at this most important of ministries: Motherhood.
I was cleaning out the myriads of writing samples and notes in my office, and one of the things I ran across was a folder with notes from a message I gave at my home church for Mother's Day, 2021. I felt then, as I do now, that God gave me insights into the life of an unlikely heroine. Rereading my notes made me want to share them with you, as a podcast in honor of Mother's Day
We usually like to speak of all the wonderful, glowing, soft, and fluffy things about motherhood on Mother's Day.
“M is for million things she gave me…”
But the truth is that motherhood is often messy, gritty, and painful. Even the very best Moms will feel beaten, overlooked, and underappreciated at times. It's the job we desperately want to succeed at, yet we often feel we fail.
That is why I want to look at a messy, gritty, pain-filled story of a single Mom from the Bible. In fact, I have never heard her held up as an example of fine mothering. Yet, something about her made God Himself meet with her not once, but twice.
Any guesses?
I’ll give you a hint: She was told she would raise “a wild donkey of a man.”
If you guessed Hagar, you guessed correctly!
I believe you will enjoy this journey into Abraham's days, set in a bleak desert scene, where drama and danger ensue over the unusual birth of two sons.
